This event is a highlight in any diesel enthusiast's calendar and a great day out for families, as we start off the new season with a weekend of diesel traction.
We're delighted to announce the first guest for this event will be Class 33, 33103 curtesy of Nemesis Rail and the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. We're already excited to pair 33103 with classmate D6535 (33116).

Alongside the 2026 Diesel Gala, the Bluebell Railway is delighted to celebrate 40 years of Network SouthEast (NSE). The centre of these celebrations will be Horsted Keynes, which will act as the main hub for displays, exhibits, and themed activities throughout the gala weekend.
Launched in 1986, Network SouthEast brought a bold and recognisable identity to commuter and regional rail services across London and the South East. Its distinctive red, white and blue livery quickly became iconic, representing a period of modernisation, investment, and renewed pride in railway travel. NSE services operated extensively across Sussex and the wider South East region, forming a vital part of everyday life for commuters, holidaymakers, and rail enthusiasts alike. Many visitors to the Bluebell Railway will have fond memories of travelling on NSE services, making this anniversary particularly meaningful for the local area and surrounding communities.

Visitors to the 2026 Diesel Gala will once again have the opportunity to experience this iconic unit in operation, providing a fitting tribute to one of the South East's most distinctive diesel fleets.

We are delighted to welcome back 33108 to The Bluebell Railway and for its inclusion in this year's Diesel Gala.
British Rail Class 33 locomotive 33108, originally numbered D6521, was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company and entered service on 10 September 1960. Initially allocated to Hither Green, it was reallocated to Eastleigh in 1963, where it remained for the rest of its working life.
We are very grateful to the 33/1 Preservation Company for allowing 33108 to take part in the 2026 Diesel Gala.
Class 50 No. 50026 'Indomitable'

Are you ready to travel back to the 1980s, when British Rail blue dominated the railway and diesel power ruled the rails?
If so, then back by popular demand following last year's successful event, our two BR blue shuntersâ??03078 and 08915â??are once again stepping out of the yard and into the spotlight for our 2026 Shunter Sunday!
Usually confined to shunting duties and standby work for the steam fleet, this is their chance to take charge of the line.
Throughout the day, the pair will haul a varied mix of passenger and freight services, recreating the sights and sounds of a bygone era. Expect double-headed action, top-and-tail formations, and plenty of rare mileage behind both locomotives as they work a busy and intensive timetable.
Whether you joined us last year or are looking to experience something a little different, this is a day not to be missed.

Sadly our previously announced visitor, Class 31 no. 31210, is no longer able to attend our 12th & 13th September Diesel Gala due to operational requirements. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank Hanson & Hall for their assistance so far. We sincerely hope to host the loco here at a future event.
We were quite excited to have a 31 back at the DFR and so we've been hard at work sorting a suitable solution. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that the Forest will still reverberate to the sounds of a Railfreight Grey & Yellow Class 31, however the number on the side will read 31130!
We're grateful to the Suburban Preservation Group and the Avon Valley Railway for making '130 available for the event, and are looking forward to welcoming her back to the DFR. The loco does not usually venture away from the AVR - the last time was for our 2022 gala, seen below at Upper Forge Crossing - and has not operated a service there since the end of last year, so we are pleased to host its first passenger services of 2026.

The home fleet, including our shunting locomotives, along with some interesting visiting locomotives will be put through their paces over some of the most challenging gradients in preservation. We'll have British Railways blue liveried locomotives working with our blue and grey liveried coaching stock too!

What to expect
As usual we will be running a 3 train intensive service throughout the weekend with evening Real Ale trains on Saturday - these are included in your great value fare!
You'll be able to see our blue locomotives hauling our rake of blue and grey coaching stock, travel on shuttle trains into Epping Forest and hear the locomotives working hard over our challenging gradients!
Vintage London buses will provide connections to Epping Underground station (Central Line, zone 6) with all our train services, with some bus services also operating to Shenfield station (for Greater Anglia and Elizabeth Line services)
On train bars
Our on train bars will be also be open, serving a selection of real ales, as well as a range of wines, lagers and soft drinks, and, on the Saturday evening, we will be running our Real Ale Train.
LNER Cafeat North Weald and the Buffet Stop at Ongar
Our catering outlets will be open all day. Hot snacks and other light refreshments and hot and cold drinks are available at the LNER Cafeat North Weald, including breakfast rolls until 11.30; the Buffet Stop at Ongar will be offering hot and cold drinks and other light refreshments.
