To the Birthplace and the Backbone Saturday 11th October 2025 to Sunday 12th October 2025 Please read all of the text below before making your booking via the 'Book online' button at the bottom of this page. In partnership with Alstom, RailAdventure and 125 Group, the Branch Line Society is pleased to offer this amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel in style to the Polmadie open day - Polmadie 150 - in Scotland. Not only will this train take you to Scotland to visit the open day, but this special train, hauled by two RailAdventure Class 43 locomotives - with Derby-built Mark 3 coaches from 125 Group - will allow passengers to board at Alstom's Derby Litchurch Lane Works, meaning a direct link between the two Railway 200 sites. Located around two miles south-east of Glasgow Central railway station, Alstom's Glasgow Traincare Centre is currently the main base of the iconic Caledonian Sleeper service, where it is maintained and cleaned by over 100 staff who provide a round-the-clock service. Polmadie Depot typically welcomes 17 trains per day, including Avanti West Coast's fleet of Alstom-built Class 390 Pendolinos. The railtour is called To the Birthplace and the Backbone, as the same set will also travel between Derby and Darlington - the location of the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives - a few weeks before its trip to Polmadie. 'Backbone' refers to Glasgow being the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, Europe's busiest mixed-use railway. This railtour will also call at Derby railway station, and then Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western and Lancaster, before making its way to Motherwell for the final pick-up before we head into Glasgow for the excitement to begin. The train will return to Derby Litchurch Lane Works - which celebrates its own 150th birthday in 2026 - the following day. The return journey and access to the open day (Polmadie 150) is included in your ticket price. And what will we do when we arrive in Glasgow? Well, with huge thanks to Alstom, we can confirm that the Scottish maintenance facility will welcome its first-ever passenger train, giving railfans a unique opportunity to ride along rare track across the depot site, including haulage by three Class 08 shunters (08451, 08696 and 08954). Multiple depot lines will be covered during our visit. However, due to on-the-day operational requirements, we can't yet confirm yet which specific lines will be covered. On route to and from Polmadie Depot, we are also hoping to cover the very rarely-used Number 1 and 2 Sidings just outside of Glasgow Central. And our route North, in true Branch Line Society style, will be covering a multitude of rare track items of interest, including the Litchurch Lane Works connection, Preston Dn & Up Goods loop, Carnforth No 2 Up and Dn Goods, Oxenholme Dn Windermere, Penrith P3, Carlisle No 2 Carriage Siding plus a whole additional list of WCML loops and Goods Lines which can be seen in the below spec. There really is something for everyone! On board we will have the excellent 125 Group buffet car serving a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks, and we will be running our very successful on board charity raffle for Polmadie's nominated charities. Plus, after the excitement of Saturday's journey north and trip round Polmadie depot, you will have the evening to spend with friends and family, exploring the vibrant City of Glasgow. Sunday morning will be equally interesting, as you arrive at Polmadie Depot on shuttle buses from Glasgow Central, where you will be greeted by Alstom with a unique line-up of locomotives that have been based at the depot over the last 150 years. Weekly Wind-Up #2219 2219 ? 16 October 2025 NORTHFLEET (Train to Gravesend, GRV) Earl Grey, 177 Vale Road, Northfleet, Kent. DA11 8BP A new venue for us today, the Earl Grey has been a popular watering hole for more than 250 years. This Shepherd Neame pub, which is actually closer to Gravesend station, will arrange to have a mild for us and Sheps 'Late Red' should also be on. It's just over a mile walk, or you may use buses 481/3 (every 30-35 minutes) from Gravesend station to All Saints Church, Perry Street. Note that buses no longer continue to Ebbsfleet station, if using HS1 use FastTrack service B from the end of Vale Road instead. At the time of writing Arriva still has four Dennis Darts, which may be used on 481/483, but these are now living on extremely borrowed time. You might also like to pay a visit to nearby Iron Pier brewery tap en route, which we will not be visiting separately this year. Note that it doesn't open until 17:00, though.
Sulzer Diesel Day Friday 17 October 2025 Join us on Friday 17th October for our Sulzer Running Day. Autumn Steam Weekend Friday 17th - Sunday 19th October Confirmed Locomotives - LSWR T3 4-4-0 No. 563 (courtesy of the Swanage Railway Trust) - GWR Castle Class No.5029 'Nunney Castle' (courtesy of Locomotive Services Limited) This year we are pleased to announce the return of our Autumn Steam Weekend, celebrating 200 years of railway history as part of the Rail200 celebrations, and one of the biggest events of the heritage railway calendar. We will be welcoming a number of visiting engines from both heritage railways and mainline operators. An intensive timetable will be operating on all three days allowing you to explore our historic stations, travel behind iconic locomotives, and enjoy the autumn colours on England's longest heritage railway at its very best. From the Quantock Hills to the Somerset Coast, we'll be running from early morning into the evening, with express trains, local passenger trains, and our popular heritage goods train. Some trains will also continue past Bishops Lydeard and run to the very end of our line at Norton Fitzwarren, utilising a stretch of the line that is rarely used for passenger trains. Our railway really comes to life on this weekend, with our museums, heritage displays, and model railways open for you to enjoy. Don't forget your camera! Our first visiting engine has been announced as London and South Western Railway T3 Class 4-4-0 no.563, which will be appearing at the WSR for the first time courtesy of the Swanage Railway Trust. This engine first returned to steam in 2023 following overhaul. Prior to this, the last time the engine had steamed was in 1948! No.563 will certainly make for a rare sight on the WSR in its striking LSWR Green livery. The second visitor for the Autumn Steam Weekend is GWR Castle Class No.5029 'Nunney Castle', courtesy of Locomotive Services Limited. This will be the engine's first visit to a preserved railway since returning to traffic earlier in 2025. Built in 1934 at Swindon Works, Nunney Castle is an example of the hugely successful Castle Class, built to haul the Great Western Railway's premier express trains from London to the South West, Midlands and Wales. The locomotive was a staple of mainline operations until early 2015 when the engine was withdrawn for a comprehensive overhaul. Steam Festival 2025 Saturday 25 October and Sunday 26 October 2025 Steam Spectacular at the Vale of Rheidol Railway Unique BR Blue Steam Loco Returns as All Three Rheidol Tanks Star in Festival Line-Up The Vale of Rheidol Railway will stage one of its most ambitious events to date this autumn, combining historic repaints, intensive services and visiting attractions for an unmissable Steam Festival on 25th & 26th October 2025. The headline news is the long-awaited return to service of No. 9 'Prince of Wales', which has been out of traffic since 2020. Fresh from overhaul, it will be unveiled in later BR Corporate Blue lined livery with cab-side double arrow branding - unique in British railway history. No other steam locomotives in the UK - other than the Rheidol tanks - ever authentically carried this bold corporate image, making No. 9's repaint a true one-off. It will also be running, for the first time, with it's air-pump concealed in the water tanks. All three of the line's famous Rheidol Tanks wore BR Blue during British Railways ownership, but this is the first time since 1982 that the colour has been seen on the railway - and the first time in preservation. Its return in 2025, during the Railway200 anniversary year, is a fitting way to celebrate both the Vale of Rheidol's distinctive BR story and 200 years of innovation on Britain's railways. Joining No. 9 in action will be: No. 7 'Owain Glynd?r', freshly repainted in BR lined green, and reunited with its original nameplates. No. 8 'Llywelyn', in BR black with lion-holding-wheel crest. The line's powerful NGG13 Garratt locomotive No. 60 'Drakensberg', adding further variety to the roster. For the first time in many years, all three Rheidol Tanks will appear together in authentic BR liveries with their nameplates fitted, recreating the look of the railway in its closing decades as the last steam-only outpost of British Rail. An Intensive Weekend of Steam The festival will feature a special intensive timetable, with five departures on Saturday and four on Sunday from Aberystwyth. Multiple locos will be in steam each day, offering enthusiasts the chance to see a rare variety of combinations in service. Tickets will be issued as Day Rovers, allowing unlimited travel on all services throughout the day - so visitors can make the most of the intensive timetable and sample different locomotives across multiple trips. (The ticket will not cover admission to the Museum/Waterman layout - a separate ticket will be required). At Aberystwyth station, visitors will also be able to take the regulator themselves, with driver experience turns on one of the smaller engines - offering a hands-on taste of steam footplate work. More Than Just the Trains Complementing the steam action: Pete Waterman's world-record 208-foot portable model railway, on display in the VOR Museum throughout half term (25th October - 2nd November). A separate admission ticket applies to the exhibition. A model railway exhibition, showcasing layouts from a variety of clubs and modellers. A line-up of model road steam engines, adding to the festival atmosphere around the station. Vale of Rheidol Railway Managing Director, Llyr ap Iolo, said: 'The return of No. 9 to traffic in BR Blue is a landmark moment for the Vale of Rheidol. It's one of the only three steam locomotives ever to authentically carry this livery, and to see it back in Railway200 year - alongside Nos. 7 and 8 in green and black - makes this festival a real celebration of our unique BR heritage. Add in the Garratt, an intensive timetable and a host of model and road steam exhibits, and it promises to be a true festival of steam in every sense.'

Weekly Wind-Up #2221 2221 ? 30 October 2025 KINGSTON (KNG) Willoughby Arms, 47 Willoughby Rd, Kingston upon Thames. KT2 6LN A fourth visit to the Willoughby Arms, which we last visited almost eighteen months ago. This Victorian back-street local is divided into a sports bar with games and a quieter lounge area. There is also a large garden with a number of 'beach huts'. Up to 7 beers are on hand pump, which tend to be sourced from smaller and local breweries and always includes something dark. Pizzas are available, cooked to order. See map. There are now very few class 455 diagrams serving Kingston - most are now covered by 701s, albeit more than five years later than they should have been! This may well be your last chance to attend a WU by class 455. Check planners on the day for allocations.
