Railway Touring Company - The Cumbrian Coast Express

The Cumbrian Coast Express Saturday 27 June 2026 Our journey will combine the scenic grandeur of the Cumbrian Fells with the exposed Cumbrian coastline that skirts the western edge of the Lake District. We have a high-speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth, hauled by a blue Class 86 electric locomotive. We then enjoy a steam tour from Carnforth via the Cumbria Coast. We return from Carnforth to London behind our blue electric locomotive. We leave London Euston with electric traction, and speed north along the West Coast Main Line (WCML). We stop to pick up passengers at Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton and Crewe. We continue north along the WCML to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers. We pass through Lancaster and along the edge of Morecambe Bay before arriving at Carnforth. Leaving Carnforth steam hauled, we pass the famous Brief Encounter cafebefore continuing to Arnside, crossing the Kent Viaduct to Grange-over-Sands. Our journey then continues over the Leven Viaduct through Ulverston and Dalton, before travelling via Kirkby-in-Furness and Millom along the spectacular Cumbrian Coast to Ravenglass. At Ravenglass, we have arranged a private charter on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Alternatively, for those who prefer, there is an optional excursion to visit Muncaster Castle. After enjoying our time at Ravenglass, we rejoin our steam-hauled train for the return journey to Carnforth, once again taking in the scenic coastal route along the southern Cumbrian Coast. At Millom, we head inland and follow the sweeping estuary through Foxfield and Kirkby in Furness. Once again we curve along the edge of the bay through to Grange-over-Sands. There are more views across Morecambe Bay as we cross the lengthy Kent Viaduct at Arnside and approach Carnforth. Here, we shall say farewell to our gallant steam locomotive and our blue Class 86 electric locomotive will take over for a fast run to London Euston. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers. **Updated 21/05/26 Available Classes Premier Dining Premier Dining includes a full English breakfast and four course dinner freshly prepared on board and silver served at your seat. Weekly Wind-Up - Weekly Wind-Up #2256

Weekly Wind-Up #2256 2256 ? 9 July 2026 HANWELL (HAN) The Fox, 77 Green Lane, Hanwell, London. W7 2PJ We last visited Hanwell in 2019 when we went to The Grosvenor for the third time, but we now try a second new venue for this sheet when we visit today. The Fox is a welcoming local less than a minute from the Grand Union canal and is a favourite with canal walkers, cyclists, and dog walkers. Originally a Royal Brewery house, the pub was saved from the developers in 2001 and has won the branch Pub of the Year award on many occasions since. The pub changed hands and was refurbished in 2020, extending the pub into the garden and creating a new partly covered large outdoor seating area. A dark beer has been requested for our visit, but also note that Ealing Beer Festival is on this week, where there will be many dark beers amongst the offerings. The festival is in Walpole Park, Ealing, from where buses 207, 483 or E8 provide regular services to Hanwell.

Watercress Line (Mid-Hants Railway) - Diesel Gala

Diesel Gala Friday 10 July to Sunday 12 July 2026 Enjoy the sights and sounds of a weekend of heritage diesel traction over our steeply graded line The Diesel Gala will see the railway operated by visiting diesel engines and our home-fleet of diesel locomotives. It will be a three day event, taking place from Friday 10 July through to Sunday 12 July, and will see an intensive train service operating over the steeply graded route, providing the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of both heritage and modern diesel traction. More details to follow. Visiting locomotives First Guest: We are absolutely delighted to announce that our first visitor for the gala has been confirmed as Class 423 4VEP 3417 Gordon Pettit, courtesy of our friends at the Southern Electric Traction Group and the Bluebell Railway. The 4VEP units were a fleet of 194 high density express passenger electric units drawing power from the 750-volt DC third rail. Once an everyday sight on the Southern Region of British Rail operating between 1967 and 2005, 3417 is now the only complete 4VEP left and is being lovingly restored thanks to the Southern Electric Traction Group with the support of the Bluebell Railway. Built partly at York and Derby works this unit entered service as 7717 on 8th July 1967 (the day before steam traction finished on the Southern Region) and was based at Bournemouth. The unit was later renumbered to 3417 in the 1990's and in 2004 the unit was repainted by South West Trains into a version of the original BR Blue as built livery and named Gordon Pettit after the much-respected last General Manager of the Southern Region. 3417 then became a bit of celebrity and brought down the curtain on regular mainline slam door operation on the Southern region in May 2005. Saved for preservation by the Southern Electric Traction Group initially stored at Wimbledon Park Depot, the unit moved for a time to East Grinstead and subsequently to Strawberry Hill Depot near Twickenham (SW London). There will be plenty of opportunities to travel behind this fabulous unit over the gala weekend. Second Guest Locomotive: We are absolutely delighted to announce that our second visitor has been confirmed as Class 31 31210, courtesy of Jason Hall, subject to the completion of repairs and recertification. The Class 31 (or Brush type 2 as they were originally known) were a fleet of 263 locomotives built by the Brush Traction Company in the Falcon Works in Loughborough. The locomotives were built between 1957 and 1962 initially planned for the Eastern Region, and then later used on the Midland and Western Regions as well. The type was unique in this country having an A-1-A wheel arrangement, in that the outer wheels of each bogie were powered, but the centre wheels were unpowered and purely carried the weight. Built as D5634, the loco entered service on 21st July 1960 at Stratford depot, and then to March depot. Originally built with a Mirrless JVS12T engine, however, the type suffered in the early years with cracking, and British Rail decided to replace all of the engines with an English Electric 12SVT engine rated at 1470 hp. D5634 received its new engine in May 1968, along with the BR corporate blue livery and in 1973 was allocated to Finsbury Park. March 1974 saw the introduction of the TOPS system (Total Operations Processing System) which gave all locomotive a five-character number (the first two numbers indicating the Class), and from then on D5634 became 31210. In 1976 31210 moved to Bristol Bath Road on the Western Region. 31210 worked its last passenger train on 9th September 1990, which was a Carlisle to Cleethorpes charter train, and by the Autumn of 1991 was stored unserviceable and officially withdrawn in February 1992. After a lengthy overhaul at several locations, 2026 will see 31210 once again active, and we are delighted to be one of the first locations for this locomotive to be operating since 1991. More visitors to be announced!

Severn Valley Railway - Summer Gala

Summer Gala Saturday 18 July and Sunday 19 July 2026 We're celebrating the smallest locomotives in our home-fleet and extra special (and very little) visiting locomotives this summer! What to expect at the Summer Gala? Our weekend rail-fest will feature both guest and home-fleet locomotives operating a busy timetable between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. If you love steam, diesel and something a little bit different, this is the place to be! Ride behind every locomotive, visit The Engine House at Highley to break your day, or sample the finest real-ales in our pubs! Download the timetable to start planning your visit. In addition to the 'big trains', Kidderminster Station will host 'little trains' with a live-steam Gauge 1 model railway, running throughout the weekend. Our first guest locomotive has been announced as Kerr Stuart 'Witch' class locomotive No 4388. Built in 1926 by Kerr, Stuart & Company, this distinctive locomotive features an unusual design with outside cylinders, no front footplate and a notably small saddle tank. Our thanks to Jack Dibnah and the Foxfield Railway, as well as Footplate of Kidderminster for sponsoring the road-haulage. Our second guest locomotive joining the line-up is Neilson & Co No 2937, a fascinating industrial steam locomotive with a rich heritage stretching back to the Victorian era. We're grateful to Keith Sergeant and the Chasewater Railway for the loan of the locomotive. Our third and final guest for the Summer Gala is Hunslet Locomotive No. 3783 'Hollybank No 3' and we're grateful to Chasewater Railway for the loan of the locomotive. Plus, we hope to welcome Class 07 D2996 into service, following its recent arrival.

Stars of the show: Kerr Stuart 4388 - rare 'Witch' class locomotive Neilson & Co No 2937 - 1882-built locomotive Hunslet No. 3783 'Hollybank No 3' GWR 813 GWR 7714 Class 07 D2996 Class 09 09107 Class 14 D9551 Class 17 D8568 Class 20 20048 Class 101 DMU

Railway Touring Company - The Cumbrian Coast Express

The Cumbrian Coast Express Saturday 15 August 2026 This is a wonderful opportunity for those from the Crewe and Manchester areas to travel by steam train on a journey combining the scenic grandeur of the Cumbrian Fells with the exposed Cumbrian coastline that skirts the western edge of the Lake District. We travel from Carnforth steam hauled around the very scenic Cumbrian Coastal line.? Our train leaves Crewe, diesel hauled, at around 07:00 and calls at Wilmslow, Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly to pick up passengers. We join the West Coast Main Line (WCML) and travel north to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers. After enjoying our time at Ravenglass, we depart steam hauled, chimney first, back to Carnforth where our diesel locomotive will once again take over and haul our train back to Crewe. Here, we shall say farewell to our gallant steam locomotive and our diesel will take over for our run back to Crewe. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers. **Updated 28/05/26 Available Classes Premier Dining Premier Dining includes a full English breakfast and four course dinner freshly prepared on board and silver served at your seat. Railway Touring Company - The Cumbrian Mountain Express

The Cumbrian Mountain Express Saturday 3 October 2026 Our final Cumbrian Mountain Express for 2026 provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Autumn steam haulage over the Northern Fells, including the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Railway. We have a high speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth, hauled by a blue Class 86 electric locomotive. We then enjoy a circular steam tour outwards via Shap to Carlisle and back via the Settle and Carlisle line. We return from Preston to London behind our blue electric locomotive. We leave London Euston with electric traction, and speed north along the West Coast Main Line (WCML). We stop to pick up passengers at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton and Crewe. We continue north along the WCML to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers. We continue through Lancaster to Carnforth, where we change motive power to a steam locomotive from the Carnforth pool. Leaving Carnforth, our steam locomotive will be working hard when we climb the first severe gradient up to Grayrigg. We then travel through the beautiful Lune Gorge to Tebay, gaining speed for the ascent to Shap. This well-known section of the WCML has a gradient of 1 in 75 and, in the former days of steam locomotives, banking engines from Tebay were often used to assist trains. After crossing the Cumbrian Fells we descend to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle. There will be around two hours in Carlisle, providing time to explore this ancient 'Border' city with its castle, cathedral, Tullie House Museum, and shopping centre. We leave Carlisle and join the Settle & Carlisle Railway, one of the most well known and best loved stretches of railway line in Britain. We soon begin climbing, and then at Appleby, we stop for our steam locomotive to take on water. The climbing continues through scenic Kirkby Stephen towards the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill, 1169 feet above sea level. We pass over tall viaducts, including the famous one at Ribblehead, and through tunnels. There are magnificent views across the Fells and to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. We should have a fast run out of the hills, through Settle, until we stop again for our locomotive to take on water. ?Our journey continues through Hellifield and Clitheroe to Preston where we say goodbye to our steam locomotive. We pass though Wigan and Warrington en route to Crewe hauled by our blue class 86 electric locomotive with a fast run to London expected. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers. Railway Touring Company - The Esk Valley

The Esk Valley Friday 9 October 2026 Join us for a memorable day out over one of Britain's most scenic and least-travelled railway routes. This special excursion offers the rare opportunity to travel the entire Esk Valley Line between Middlesbrough and Whitby, enjoying the spectacle of steam haulage over a line renowned for its rural charm, dramatic landscapes and fascinating railway history. Our train departs from Carnforth, steam hauled, and calls at Bentham, Hellifield, Skipton, Leeds and York to pick up passengers. From York, we head north along the East Coast Main Line, traversing the famous high-speed stretch through Thirsk to Northallerton. Leaving the ECML at Northallerton, we take the Eaglescliffe line and cross the magnificent Yarm Viaduct high above the River Tees before continuing through Middlesbrough to join the Esk Valley Line. The climb begins immediately as we ascend towards Nunthorpe and Battersby, one of the most unusual stations in Britain. Once an important junction, Battersby now requires all trains to reverse direction before continuing their journey. Following the reversal at Battersby, our train continues, diesel hauled, through the heart of the North York Moors. This delightful section passes through the remote villages of Kildale, Commondale, Danby and Glaisdale, showcasing some of the most picturesque countryside in northern England. At Grosmont, where the Esk Valley Line meets the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway, we continue eastwards alongside the River Esk. The line winds through the attractive villages of Sleights and Ruswarp before arriving at the historic seaside town of Whitby. There will be just over an hour to explore Whitby at leisure. Famed for its maritime heritage and as the home of Captain James Cook, Whitby offers visitors a wealth of attractions, from its bustling harbour and charming narrow streets to the iconic Abbey perched high above the town. Of course, no visit would be complete without sampling Whitby's renowned fish and chips. For the return journey, our train departs Whitby steam hauled as far as Battersby. From there, diesel traction takes over to Stockton, where our steam locomotive once again resumes sole charge for the run via Middlesbrough, Northallerton and York. We then continue southwards, setting down passengers at Leeds, Skipton, Hellifield, Bentham and Carnforth. Our day out begins when our train leaves London Victoria station at around 10:50, hauled by our steam locomotive. We journey south along the main line towards Brighton passing through East Croydon, Redhill, Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges and Haywards Heath. The route crosses the Weald, an ancient area of woodland scattered with farms and villages. We head to Eastbourne where our steam locomotive will be serviced and there will be time to visit this popular South Coast seaside town on the lead up to Christmas. The seafront consists almost entirely of Victorian hotels, which along with its pier and bandstand, give it a timeless appeal. The town is situated immediately east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain and an area of outstanding natural beauty. We leave Eastbourne, diesel-hauled and head along the Sussex Coast through Normans Bay, Cooden Beach, and Bexhill to Hastings. Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman Conquest of England, and also because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. The town is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of television since the pioneer of television, John Logie Baird, lived there. It has a delightful shopping centre with a large choice of handcrafted goods and elegant fashions and has become an important town in the region for Art and Antique Dealers. Whilst at Sherborne, why not join in the traditional Christmas Carol Service specially arranged for our tour and held in the splendid surroundings of its ancient Abbey. Passengers have the choice of alighting at Sherborne or continuing with the train to Yeovil Junction where the steam locomotive will be turned and serviced at Yeovil Railway Centre. Hauled by a locomotive from the Carnforth pool, you can sit back and enjoy the varied scenery as we travel north over one of Britain's most scenic main lines.? Our journey will commence diesel hauled from the historic city of York, with its long association with railways, including the location of the National Railway Museum. Heading north away from York, we will travel down the East Coast main line through to Northallerton. From here we head to Durham to pick up further passengers, before heading towards Tyneside and over the river Tyne to Newcastle. Leaving Newcastle, we head west along the scenic Tyne Valley line via Hexham to Carlisle, following the course of Hadrian's Wall as we pass through some of the North East's most attractive countryside. At Carlisle our steam locomotive will join the train to take over the journey to Edinburgh. You can sit back and enjoy an forgettable steam hauled run north through the open landscapes of southern Scotland, travelling via Lockerbie and climbing to the summit at Beattock - one of the most famous stretches of railway in the UK. ? We expect to arrive into Edinburgh, the Capital of Scotland, where time will be available for you to visit the city and its Christmas market, located in Princes Street Gardens, whilst our locomotive is serviced for the return journey. Apart from its numerous shops and restaurants along Princes Street, there are many sights to see and visit, including the Palace of Holyrood, the Castle on the Royal Mile, Galleries and Museums and Princes Street Gardens. For the return journey, steam haulage will continue from Edinburgh back to Carlisle, following the same scenic route. At Carlisle, the steam locomotive will be detached, and a diesel locomotive will take over for the final leg of the journey, returning via Newcastle and Durham before arriving back in York. Look out for Father Christmas who will be visiting the train during the day and handing out presents to all children on board. If you have children with you on the trip, please let us know your child's name and age when booking.
