Weekly Wind-Up #2264 2264 ? 3 September 2026 TUNBRIDGE WELLS (TBW) Halfway House, Brenchley and Royal Oak, 92 Prospect Rd, TN2 4SY ?? For our annual visit to the 'Halfway House' we have a bus new to the Wind Up. This also means that we will pick up from Tunbridge Wells and will have an afternoon visit. There should be enough capacity, but please use this link to give an indication of numbers. The bus will depart from the bus stop in Mount Pleasant Road (main road in front of the station, down side) at 12:15 - don't be late! Mild has been requested to accompany the good range of local and national guest beers, which are always on tap. The beer dispense is gravity, through extended pipes from the cold room. Food will also be available from the normal menu until 14:30. We hope to visit a second pub before terminating at the Royal Oak for the evening, which we last visited in 2019. Beers here are mainly from Kent and Sussex breweries and a mild has been requested for us. No food here, but you are welcome to bring your own. The bus will leave us at the Royal Oak at around 17:00. It's a 12 minute walk to Tunbridge Wells station - See map. The red line indicates a walking route via the park (Calverley Grounds) which will save a bit of time.

Britain's newest heritage railway line, metres away from where the world's first public fare paying passenger took place over 200 years ago. Diesel Gala Saturday 12 September and Sunday 13 September 2026 We are delighted to announce Class 31, 31210, as our first visitor courtesy of Hanson & Hall. In addition Class 09 09106 courtesy of Road & Rail Steam Services, and Class 08 08888 courtesy of Valley Road Preservation will also be in operation. 31210 will join E6003, 09106, 08888 and other as-yet unconfirmed locomotives on the 12th & 13th September for two days of diesel action in the Forest of Dean.

Toots Express Saturday 12th September 2026 This very special train, in support of Macmillan Cancer Support will be one not too miss, and we can't wait for you to join us as we take a pair of 50s to Edinburgh for an early Autumn break, where you will have time to explore this beautiful City, enjoy some true Scottish hospitality, or just wander along the Royal Mile to the Castle for some spectacular sights. Our very good friend Nick Collins, Network Rail Charter's Team Leader, who has been supporting the operation of Charters across the UK for a number of years, unfortunately lost his wife Suzanne recently to the horrible disease of cancer. In her memory we are truly honoured to be working with all of our partners to bring you this day out. The number of people being diagnosed with cancer is rising and more people are surviving cancer than ever before. This means the nature of cancer care itself needs to adapt and evolve to meet the rapidly changing needs of people living with cancer. But current cancer care provision is approaching a crisis point. Existing support services are struggling to cope, yet the number of people living with cancer continues to grow. We need to act now to prevent a crisis in cancer care. Macmillan Cancer Support is here to do whatever it takes to support people living with cancer, and they work with various partners to provide services for people living with cancer at every stage of their cancer experience. We start our day in the slightly unusual location of Alexandra Palace, where our 2 x Class 50's and full rake of comfortable MK3 coaching stock will depart just after 05.30. We head North, picking up at Potters Bar, Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Royston, Cambridge, Ely, March and Peterborough, before making a diversion along the 'Joint Line' through Lincoln to Doncaster and onwards to York. Here, our final Pick up will be mid morning, plus will give us the opportunity for a short leg stretch and to get those all important photos. As we head further North, although our ultimate aim is Edinburgh, we are giving you the opportunity to alight earlier if you so wish and explore the amazing Cities of Durham or Newcastle. If not, we carry on and will be pleased to set you down in Edinburgh at 14:00 for your City exploration to begin. Returning to the station for our departure just after 16.30, our Class 50's will whisk you Southbound alongside the beautiful North East Coastline, where views of Bamburgh Castle - on its rocky hill, can be seen. Quick Pick-ups in Newcastle and Durham, before we arrive at our first set-down in York. We continue back towards Alexandra Palace, dropping our passengers off at the same locations as our outward journey, before we say a final goodbye to the remaining passengers just after midnight after an epic adventure. First Class Dining includes a wonderful Great British Breakfast on the way to Edinburgh and a four course dinner, served at your seat by our fantastic team, on the return. A well stocked Buffet Car will serve a wide range of snacks, drinks and light refreshments and will be available for those travelling in First Class Non Dining and Standard Class. A real ale bar will be available throughout. We will also be running our very successful on board charity raffle. We;re pleased to announce that BR Shandard Class 4 Tank No 80097 will be the fourth and final guest locomotive appearing at the Autumn Steam Gala Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 September 2026. The popular tank engine will visit courtesy of the East Lancashire Railway joining previously announced guests GWR Small Prairie No 5526, GWR Pannier Tank No 9681 and Ivatt Class 2MT No 41313 for a gala celebrating the Severn Valley Railway in its pre-preservation days. We have our fingers crossed for the anticipated gala debut of newly restored Prairie tank GWR No 4150. Joining the line-up will be Ivatt Class 2 tank locomotive No 41313, appearing courtesy of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The visit marks several notable milestones, including the locomotive's first-ever appearance at the Severn Valley Railway and the first visit by an Isle of Wight-based locomotive to the line. It will also become only the third member of the Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2 tank family to visit the SVR in preservation. We're pleased that BR(W) Pannier Tank 9681 will also be joining us for the Autumn Steam Gala (17-20 September). With the chance to pair up with our own BR Pannier Tank 7714, we are sure that 9681 is going to be a real draw for our passengers. We are grateful to the Dean Forest Locomotive Group for the hire of their locomotive, and to Dean Forest Railway for making the locomotive available. The 45xx and 4575 class Prairie tanks were synonymous with branch line operations across much of the Great Western Railway network, making No 5526 an ideal addition to the gala. We're delighted to welcome an exciting lineup of visiting and home fleet locomotives, making this a must-see event for steam enthusiasts and families alike. Visiting locomotives include Ivatt 2MT 41313 courtesy of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Across all three days, an intensive timetable will keep the action moving, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore our beautifully preserved stations, ride behind iconic engines, and take in the stunning autumn scenery along England's longest heritage railway. From the rolling Quantock Hills to the Somerset coast, trains will be running from early morning into the evening.
