Railway Touring Company - The Railway 200 Special

The Railway 200 Special Saturday 4th October 2025 As part of the Railway 200 celebrations in 2025, we will mark this historical milestone in the railway history of this country with our special train that will travel over part of the original route from Shildon, and Stockton to Darlington. This 26-mile journey on the S&DR between Shildon and Stockton via Darlington on 27th September 1825 transformed how the world traded, travelled, and communicated. Our special train commences at London King's Cross in the morning and we make our way northwards along the East Coast Main Line towards York, picking up passengers at Potters Bar, Stevenage and Peterborough. We will be electrically hauled by the celebrity blue liveried Class 86 locomotive 'Les Ross' from London to York. Here, we will attach our steam locomotive for the onward northbound journey along the East Coast Main Line to Darlington, where we will pause to pick up further passengers. From Darlington, we will branch off the ECML and run along the historic Bishop Auckland 'Tees Valley' line, calling at Shildon, the world's first railway town. Passengers will have the opportunity to visit Locomotion, the sister museum of the National Railway Museum. It houses the largest undercover collection of historic railway vehicles in Europe, including Robert Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 and Timothy Hackworth's San Pareil. We continue along the branch line to Bishop Auckland to the present limit of the national network. Here we will take the special link line to join the 18 mile long Weardale Railway at Bishops Auckland West station for a run as far as Stanhope, where we will have a short break to service the locomotive and an opportunity to visit the station. Our return journey along the Weardale line will be diesel hauled back to Bishops Auckland and onwards to Darlington, calling at Shildon to pick up passengers who chose to alight there earlier. At Darlington, we will reverse our direction of travel and run steam hauled once again northwards along the ECML through Durham to Newcastle. At Newcastle, we will turn the train via the Tyne bridges loop and head southwards once again, passing through Durham before we reach Ferryhill Junction. Here we will leave the ECML and head along the freight line towards Stockton. We will rejoin the route of the historic Stockton & Darlington line as far as Eaglescliffe, where we continue southwards via Yarm to Northallerton. It is then a swift run southwards along the ECML back to York, where our steam locomotive will leave the train. Our return journey back to London will be with our blue electric once again, setting down at our earlier calling points, concluding our special commemoration of Rail 200.

Branch Line Society - To the Birthplace and the Backbone

To the Birthplace and the Backbone Saturday 11th October 2025 to Sunday 12th October 2025 Please read all of the text below before making your booking via the 'Book online' button at the bottom of this page. In partnership with Alstom, RailAdventure and 125 Group, the Branch Line Society is pleased to offer this amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel in style to the Polmadie open day - Polmadie 150 - in Scotland. Not only will this train take you to Scotland to visit the open day, but this special train, hauled by two RailAdventure Class 43 locomotives - with Derby-built Mark 3 coaches from 125 Group - will allow passengers to board at Alstom's Derby Litchurch Lane Works, meaning a direct link between the two Railway 200 sites. Located around two miles south-east of Glasgow Central railway station, Alstom's Glasgow Traincare Centre is currently the main base of the iconic Caledonian Sleeper service, where it is maintained and cleaned by over 100 staff who provide a round-the-clock service. Polmadie Depot typically welcomes 17 trains per day, including Avanti West Coast's fleet of Alstom-built Class 390 Pendolinos. The railtour is called To the Birthplace and the Backbone, as the same set will also travel between Derby and Darlington - the location of the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives - a few weeks before its trip to Polmadie. 'Backbone' refers to Glasgow being the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, Europe's busiest mixed-use railway. This railtour will also call at Derby railway station, and then Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western and Lancaster, before making its way to Motherwell for the final pick-up before we head into Glasgow for the excitement to begin. The train will return to Derby Litchurch Lane Works - which celebrates its own 150th birthday in 2026 - the following day. The return journey and access to the open day (Polmadie 150) is included in your ticket price. And what will we do when we arrive in Glasgow? Well, with huge thanks to Alstom, we can confirm that the Scottish maintenance facility will welcome its first-ever passenger train, giving railfans a unique opportunity to ride along rare track across the depot site, including haulage by three Class 08 shunters (08451, 08696 and 08954). Multiple depot lines will be covered during our visit. However, due to on-the-day operational requirements, we can't yet confirm yet which specific lines will be covered. On route to and from Polmadie Depot, we are also hoping to cover the very rarely-used Number 1 and 2 Sidings just outside of Glasgow Central. And our route North, in true Branch Line Society style, will be covering a multitude of rare track items of interest, including the Litchurch Lane Works connection, Preston Dn & Up Goods loop, Carnforth No 2 Up and Dn Goods, Oxenholme Dn Windermere, Penrith P3, Carlisle No 2 Carriage Siding plus a whole additional list of WCML loops and Goods Lines which can be seen in the below spec. There really is something for everyone! On board we will have the excellent 125 Group buffet car serving a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks, and we will be running our very successful on board charity raffle for Polmadie's nominated charities. Plus, after the excitement of Saturday's journey north and trip round Polmadie depot, you will have the evening to spend with friends and family, exploring the vibrant City of Glasgow. Sunday morning will be equally interesting, as you arrive at Polmadie Depot on shuttle buses from Glasgow Central, where you will be greeted by Alstom with a unique line-up of locomotives that have been based at the depot over the last 150 years. Once back in Glasgow, you will have some time for some last-minute shopping, a quick drink or two, before re-joining our special train to take you back south. Alongside Polmadie 150, you will also get the opportunity to visit Railway 200's unique exhibition train, Inspiration, which will be stationed in Glasgow Central on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October. Admission to the train is free. If you wish to visit the Railway 200 Exhibition Train 'Inspiration', please reserve your place online at https://railway200.co.uk/inspiration/ Key Points to Note: The fare shown below is a 'round-trip' ticket - out on Saturday and return on Sunday. No accommodation is included in this ticket - please make your own accommodation arrangements. Your ticket includes access to the open day on Sunday, and a shuttle bus to and from Central Glasgow - please be aware, the only way to access the open day currently is by having a ticket for this fixture. For those boarding / alighting at Litchurch Lane, please be aware there is no car parking available on site. However, there are plenty of local car parks and on-street parking available. Passengers boarding at Litchurch Lane must be able to use a set of depot steps to reach the train. Railway Touring Company - The Cumbrian Mountain Express

The Cumbrian Mountain Express Saturday 11th October 2025 The Cumbrian Mountain Express provides a wonderful opportunity to get out and about with the added bonus of steam haulage over the Northern Fells, including the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Railway. We have a high speed journey down the West Coast Main Line to Carnforth, hauled by a blue class 86 electric locomotive. We then enjoy a circular steam tour outwards via Shap to Carlisle and back via the Settle and Carlisle line. We return from Preston to London behind our blue electric locomotive. We leave London Euston at around 06:50 with electric traction, and speed north along the West Coast Main Line (WCML). We stop to pick up passengers at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby (where passengers from Northampton join by service train), Nuneaton and Crewe. We continue north along the WCML to Preston, our final stop to pick up passengers. We continue through Lancaster to Carnforth, where we change motive power to a steam locomotive from the Carnforth pool. Leaving Carnforth, our steam locomotive will be working hard when we climb the first severe gradient up to Grayrigg. We then travel through the beautiful Lune Gorge to Tebay, gaining speed for the ascent to Shap. This well-known section of the WCML has a gradient of 1 in 75 and, in the former days of steam locomotives, banking engines from Tebay were often used to assist trains. After crossing the Cumbrian Fells we descend to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle. There will be around two hours in Carlisle, providing time to explore this ancient 'Border' city with its castle, cathedral, Tullie House Museum, and shopping centre. We leave Carlisle and join the Settle & Carlisle Railway, one of the most well known and best loved stretches of railway line in Britain. We soon begin climbing, and then at Appleby, we stop for our steam locomotive to take on water. The climbing continues through scenic Kirkby Stephen towards the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill, 1169 feet above sea level. We pass over tall viaducts, including the famous one at Ribblehead, and through tunnels. There are magnificent views across the Fells and to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. We should have a fast run out of the hills, through Settle, until we stop again for our locomotive to take on water. Our journey continues through Hellifield and Clitheroe to Preston where we say goodbye to our steam locomotive. We pass though Wigan and Warrington en route to Crewe hauled by our blue class 86 electric locomotive with a fast run to London expected. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers. ? *Passengers from Northampton will travel to and from Rugby by service train to join our train.

DA11 8BP A new venue for us today, the Earl Grey has been a popular watering hole for more than 250 years. This Shepherd Neame pub, which is actually closer to Gravesend station, will arrange to have a mild for us and Sheps 'Late Red' should also be on. It's just over a mile walk, or you may use buses 481/3 (every 30-35 minutes) from Gravesend station to All Saints Church, Perry Street. Note that buses no longer continue to Ebbsfleet station, if using HS1 use FastTrack service B from the end of Vale Road instead. At the time of writing Arriva still has four Dennis Darts, which may be used on 481/483, but these are now living on extremely borrowed time. You might also like to pay a visit to nearby Iron Pier brewery tap en route, which we will not be visiting separately this year. Note that it doesn't open until 17:00, though.

We will be welcoming a number of visiting engines from both heritage railways and mainline operators. An intensive timetable will be operating on all three days allowing you to explore our historic stations, travel behind iconic locomotives, and enjoy the autumn colours on England's longest heritage railway at its very best. From the Quantock Hills to the Somerset Coast, we'll be running from early morning into the evening, with express trains, local passenger trains, and our popular heritage goods train. Some trains will also continue past Bishops Lydeard and run to the very end of our line at Norton Fitzwarren, utilising a stretch of the line that is rarely used for passenger trains. Our railway really comes to life on this weekend, with our museums, heritage displays, and model railways open for you to enjoy. Don't forget your camera! Our first visiting engine has been announced as London and South Western Railway T3 Class 4-4-0 no.563, which will be appearing at the WSR for the first time courtesy of the Swanage Railway Trust. This engine first returned to steam in 2023 following overhaul. Prior to this, the last time the engine had steamed was in 1948! UK Railtours - The Brick and Tile

The Brick and Tile Saturday 25th October 2025 The Brick Tax in Great Britain ended in 1850. This created a significant demand for bricks and by 1892, because of its abundance of clay, Barton on Humber was the centre of the UK's thriving brick and tile industry. Today we take both class 37 and class 50 locomotives to the rarely visited Barton on Humber branch line as well as visiting the nearby Immingham freight terminal and, for those who prefer the atmosphere of UK seaside resorts, an off-train opportunity at splendid Cleethorpes. Our special train departs from Finsbury Park in the care of Class 50 50008 'Thunderer' and a classmate kindly provided by The Class 50 Alliance. We head north along the East Coast Main Line with several pick up opportunities before we deviate into the agricultural flat lands of Lincolnshire at Newark, deviating once again - this time to the north - at Pyewipe Junction and thereby avoiding the City of Lincoln itself. We proceed further north and soon we find ourselves amidst the more industrial landscape of South Yorkshire. We will undoubtedly see several rakes of wagons as we weave our way into the freight yards south of Doncaster and we will pause at the former Doncaster Royal Mail Terminal to attach a Europhoenix Ltd class 37 locomotive to the rear of our train. After our final pick up at Doncaster we once again head east, this time towards our coastal destination of Cleethorpes. Our route takes us through Scunthorpe affording excellent views of the steel works which until recently were threatened with closure but now look to have a renewed lease of life. Our arrival at Cleethorpes provides a striking contrast to Scunthorpe. Nestled on the eastern edge of Lincolnshire, where the Humber estuary meets the restless tides of the North Sea, Cleethorpes stands as a testament to the enduring British love for the seaside. With its celebrated promenade, vast golden sands, and a personality shaped by centuries of change, Cleethorpes is a town where nostalgia and new adventures intermingle beneath wide, ever-changing skies. The sands of Cleethorpes are legendary?expansive, soft, and golden, they stretch for miles, offering ample space for sandcastle builders, sunbathers, and kite flyers. At low tide, the sea retreats to reveal vast mudflats, a haven for wading birds and a spectacle for wildlife enthusiasts. The coastline is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), celebrated for its biodiversity. The iconic Cleethorpes Pier, first opened in 1873, became the jewel of the seafront. Built to stretch out into the sea and provide panoramic views, the pier quickly became the heart of social life?hosting concerts, theatre performances, and even roller-skating in later years. Though the original pier has faced adversity, including storms and fires, it remains a symbol of the town's resilience and its spirit for reinvention. Beyond the beach, the town is framed by attractive parks and gardens such as the award-winning Cleethorpes Country Park and the enchanting People's Park Supplementary Option - The Mini Tour Whilst the sights of Cleethorpes will delight many, we know that for some the opportunity to traverse the nine-mile branch line to Barton on Humber will prove to be a compelling alternative. Our train departs Cleethorpes with our class 37 locomotive now leading. We take a relatively direct route to Barton, via Ulceby and New Holland before traversing the last three miles of the branch which is single line. At Barton on Humber, extremely short platform lengths preclude any alighting or re-boarding so, with our class 50 locomotives once again leading, we set off for a run through the Immingham complex. Our circular route takes us back towards Cleethorpes as far as Great Coates where we embark on a circuit of the Grimsby District Light Railway (or 'Grimsby Light Single'). Until the early 1960's an electric tramway run parallel to the conventional line but today its use is reduced to a secondary means of access into Immingham Port. Our route through Immingham takes us past the former locomotive depot where the trackwork has been further rationalised in recent years. Notwithstanding this, the port still handles over 50 million tonnes of freight each year and remains a busy interchange for rail freight traffic. Our exit from Immingham once again takes us through Ulceby and we route towards Cleethorpes where our mini tour terminates. There will be a leg stretching break of about 30 minutes. Our Journey Home With our Class 37 once again leading we head for home. As you would expect we have introduced a somewhat circuitous route so as to provide further interest for those who enjoy class 37 traction. Our route sees us return to Scunthorpe but on reaching Stainforth Junction we head north towards the East Coast Main Line (ECML). We join the ECML at Joan Croft Junction, a quite unusual manoeuvre, and this allows us to journey north as far as Temple Hirst Junction where we divert towards Selby, though we avoid the station by taking the Canal Goods curve. We are now heading towards our first set down station at Doncaster, passing junctions at Ferrybridge and Knottingley along the way. Our arrival at Doncaster RMT we detach our class 37 locomotive and our pair of class 50's take charge for the direct run back up the ECML setting down at stations per the outbound journey as far south as Finsbury Park. Today's train will utilise Eastern Rail Services carriages with locomotives kindly provided by Europhoenix Ltd, The Class 50 Alliance and Hanson & Hall Rail. All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide. Railway Touring Company - The Varsity Explorer

The Varsity Explorer Saturday 25th October 2025 Join us on this unusual tour from Slough to Chester featuring the newly reopened section of The East-West line from Bicester to Bletchley. The added attraction is for the journey to be steam hauled by a restored main line approved steam locomotive that will see a steam train return to this section of line for the first time since 1967. Our journey starts at Slough on the Great Western Railway main line which has good connections from London Paddington. We will make our way along Brunel's historic London to Bristol route through the Thames Valley, crossing the Thames at Maidenhead on the famous arched bridge. We will call at Reading to pick up passengers before continuing along the attractive Thames Valley through Pangbourne towards Didcot, where we leave the main line to Bristol and head northwards via Radley towards Oxford. It is at Oxford North Junction where we leave the Banbury line and join the reinstated Oxford to Bicester line, pausing at Oxford Parkway to pick up further passengers. We now follow the 'Varsity Line', originally opened as a through route to serve the University cities of Oxford and Cambridge but was closed in 1967 to passenger services. The aim is to reopen the entire route from Oxford to Cambridge in stages as the East West Rail project. The section from Bedford to Bletchley will also see a major upgrade, with Cambridge the ultimate goal some years ahead. The section to Bicester reopened in 2016 and a new station was built at Bicester Village, where we will call today to pick up passengers for our steam hauled journey to Chester. We will now traverse the newly opened section from Bicester to Bletchley and pass through its new station midway at Winslow. At Bletchley, our train will use the impressive reconstructed box section Bletchley Flyover that crosses over the West Coast Main Line to gain access to a new station at Bletchley High Level. Our day is not over yet as we now make a fast run down the WCML towards Milton Keynes, where we will call to pick up passengers. A final stop to pick up passengers is made at Rugby before we continue our fast running along the Trent Valley towards Stafford and Crewe. Water will be taken at Crewe before we head westwards towards Chester, our destination for today. There will be time to explore the Roman city of Chester, one of the most visited places in the UK. Chester lies on the river Dee, close to the border with Wales, and is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. The city contains a number of medieval buildings and is famous for its 14th Century 'Rows', the first-floor level galleried walkways connecting shops and cafes. Other places of interest include the Castle, the Cathedral, and the picturesque racecourse, which is located between the city walls and the river Dee. Our special train, leaves Chester diesel hauled late afternoon for the return journey via the new Bletchley to Bicester line to Slough. We stop at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers. Vale of Rheidol Railway - Steam Festival 2025

Steam Festival 2025 Saturday 25 October and Sunday 26 October 2025 Steam Spectacular at the Vale of Rheidol Railway Unique BR Blue Steam Loco Returns as All Three Rheidol Tanks Star in Festival Line-Up The Vale of Rheidol Railway will stage one of its most ambitious events to date this autumn, combining historic repaints, intensive services and visiting attractions for an unmissable Steam Festival on 25th & 26th October 2025. The headline news is the long-awaited return to service of No. 9 'Prince of Wales', which has been out of traffic since 2020. Fresh from overhaul, it will be unveiled in later BR Corporate Blue lined livery with cab-side double arrow branding - unique in British railway history. No other steam locomotives in the UK - other than the Rheidol tanks - ever authentically carried this bold corporate image, making No. 9's repaint a true one-off. It will also be running, for the first time, with it's air-pump concealed in the water tanks. All three of the line's famous Rheidol Tanks wore BR Blue during British Railways ownership, but this is the first time since 1982 that the colour has been seen on the railway - and the first time in preservation. Its return in 2025, during the Railway200 anniversary year, is a fitting way to celebrate both the Vale of Rheidol's distinctive BR story and 200 years of innovation on Britain's railways. Joining No. 9 in action will be: No. 7 'Owain Glynd?r', freshly repainted in BR lined green, and reunited with its original nameplates. No. 8 'Llywelyn', in BR black with lion-holding-wheel crest. The line's powerful NGG13 Garratt locomotive No. 60 'Drakensberg', adding further variety to the roster. For the first time in many years, all three Rheidol Tanks will appear together in authentic BR liveries with their nameplates fitted, recreating the look of the railway in its closing decades as the last steam-only outpost of British Rail. An Intensive Weekend of Steam The festival will feature a special intensive timetable, with five departures on Saturday and four on Sunday from Aberystwyth. Multiple locos will be in steam each day, offering enthusiasts the chance to see a rare variety of combinations in service. Tickets will be issued as Day Rovers, allowing unlimited travel on all services throughout the day - so visitors can make the most of the intensive timetable and sample different locomotives across multiple trips. (The ticket will not cover admission to the Museum/Waterman layout - a separate ticket will be required). At Aberystwyth station, visitors will also be able to take the regulator themselves, with driver experience turns on one of the smaller engines - offering a hands-on taste of steam footplate work. More Than Just the Trains Complementing the steam action: Pete Waterman's world-record 208-foot portable model railway, on display in the VOR Museum throughout half term (25th October - 2nd November). A separate admission ticket applies to the exhibition. A model railway exhibition, showcasing layouts from a variety of clubs and modellers. A line-up of model road steam engines, adding to the festival atmosphere around the station. Vale of Rheidol Railway Managing Director, Llyr ap Iolo, said: 'The return of No. 9 to traffic in BR Blue is a landmark moment for the Vale of Rheidol. It's one of the only three steam locomotives ever to authentically carry this livery, and to see it back in Railway200 year - alongside Nos. 7 and 8 in green and black - makes this festival a real celebration of our unique BR heritage. Add in the Garratt, an intensive timetable and a host of model and road steam exhibits, and it promises to be a true festival of steam in every sense.'

Autumn Steam Gala Friday 31 October, Saturday 1 November and Sunday 2 November 2025 Join us at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway for an unforgettable Steam Gala on Friday 31 October and Saturday and Sunday 1 & 2 November 2025 as we commemorate 200 Years of passenger carrying railways. There are four confirmed locomotives. GWR Castle Class 4079 'Pendennis Castle' The first ever Castle Class to take to our branch line, and will also be the most powerful steam locomotive to grace our railway. She was built at the GWR Swindon Works and completed on 4 March 1924. Pendennis Castle is without doubt a celebrity locomotive with its reigning superior in the LNER and GWR exchange trials, and not forgetting its famous stint in Australia with the legendary Flying Scotsman. GWR 66XX class 0-6-2 no.6695 6695 was completed at Armstrong Whitworth's Newcastle works in October 1928 and was given works number 983. During its working life it has been employed on suburban passenger services and used to haul freight and passenger trains It was withdrawn from service in July 1964, after completing more than 620,000 miles, and sold to Woodham's Scrapyard at Barry Island in South Wales. In May 1979 it was purchased by the 56XX Tank Group (from 1995 called the 6695 Locomotive Group). Since December 2019, the locomotive has been based on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway and returned to steam in September 2022. USA Class 160 (6046) Built in Philadelphia, USA in 1945 and shipped in the early to mid 1940's to South Wales and dispatched from the Great Western Railway locomotive depot at Ebbw Junction, Newport. The locomotive spent the majority of its working life on industrial lines, before being withdrawn. We are delighted that this engine is also our resident steamer for the 2025 season. Sentinel 7109 'Joyce' Built in 1927 at the Sentinel Waggon Works, Shrewsbury, Joyce was ordered by Croydon Gasworks and gained the number 37 in their fleet. It was given the name Joyce after the daughter of Mr Sandeman, the chairman of Croydon Gas works where it operated for 32 years until 1960. The locomotive is unusual in having vertical water-tube boiler supplying transversely mounted cylinders that transmit power to the wheels via gears and chains. It's steam haulage at its best and with gradients like our 1-68 Chinnor Bank (and there's others, including quite an incline at the Princes Risborough end of the line), it will be a really very intensive 3-Days of Steam! This is only the second occasion that an all-steam Gala has been run over 3-days on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway and so please do make an advance note in your diary, or see below and book your tickets today! BRAKE VAN RIDES AT PRINCES RISBOROUGH: There will also be brake van rides at Princes Risborough: these will take place between steam departures and arrivals using our Sentinel 7109 'Joyce' brake van and hauled up and down by one or two brake vans for a authentic trip!brake van rides are included in the ticket price! Other attractions At Chinnor station there will be a visiting road steam Eddison roller engine 'Jenny' courtesy of Ali and Paul Green.

Railway 200 Celebrations Monday 27 October to Friday 31 October 2025

Mining Art Gallery, The Auckland Project - Fuelling the Railway Revolution

Fuelling the Railway Revolution 27 June 2025 - December 2025 Wednesday - Sunday 10.30am - 4pm Admission + Tickets Free with Mining Art Gallery admission Book now This special exhibition explores the inextricable link between coal mining and the railways. Born out of the necessity to transport coal, both below and above ground, the development of the railways was powered by the mining industry. Coal fuelled iron, iron made rails, rails moved coal - the great engineering cycle at the heart of the Industrial Revolution was complete and nowhere did its heart beat more strongly than in the Great Northern Coalfield. Uncover the story through the work of artists who witnessed this social and technological transformation, and those who have been inspired by it since.
